Snap Out of It! (Emotional Balance) (1951)

Weird “Mr. Edmunds” recoups his principal-as-psychologist role he performed so adroitly in Act Your Age (school principals in Coronet films never seem to have secretaries or any work). This film follows the frustrations of confused teen Howard Patterson, who won’t show his report card to his parents because he “should’ve gotten” an A in social studies. “Sometimes we expect great things,” Mr. Edmunds reflects, leaning back in his chair as Howard looks on. “And when we’re severely disappointed, we become emotionally upset.” Mr. Edmunds counsels Howard against “expecting too much” and tells him to keep his emotions “in balance.” “If your emotions are in balance, you channel your emotional energy into a direct attack on your problem!” Howard promises to lower his expectations and be more balanced, and another member of the Silent Generation leaves a Coronet film to paint the world gray. Look for the scene where a double-exposure dream image is superimposed next to a girl who hasn’t yet learned to lower her expectations. Producer: Coronet Instructional Films

  2. miamivicepastels83

    @nayanmalig mine is money based

  3. If only . . . if only . . . I’d seen this film 50 years ago (!)

My whole life would have been different.

  4. I’m not gonna lie sometimes I wish I lived in the 50′s

  5. It’s OK to feel upset about something, just don’t let this feeling overtake the control. Be able to leave this emotion behind and keep going, that way you can “wear” emotion that you want.

  6. The acting is so bad it’s hilarious! :)

  7. psh a B is a fail in today’s high school standards.

Edmunds: Do you think it was reasonable of you to expect Miss Rodgers to judge your work in the same way you did?
Howard Patterson: You mean I shouldn’t try for an A…?!
Edmunds: [sigh] You’re kind of an idiot, aren’t you, Howard?

  12. NightElectric

Why doesn’t he forge a parent’s signature? LOL

  13. this could make a good gay porn script.

  14. Basically disappointments are an ubiquitous aspect of human relations, one must have accept this fact and be able to deal with the frustrations.

  15. goddamn, all c’s lmfao.

  16. I really enjoy these films! They’re very insightful and idealistic. Plus, I REALLY like how Mr. Edmunds puts things into perspective. They’re not overly sentimental or hokey. Even decades later, the films are still relevant.

  17. I love how the teacher crumples the paper in her hand in a passive/aggressive display of silent rage. . . you can tell that she is just SEETHING with emotion and could “snap” at any second! Maybe SHE could use a therapy session with Mr. Edmunds!

I’m generally on board with this one, but I do have to balk at the “Daydreams are a sign of emotional upset” bit.
Also, even when he’s making good points, Mr. Edmunds is still creepy as hell.

  19. @shananagans5 I agree. Telling every child that they are amazing could set them up for failure. Everyone can be good at something but everyone is not AMAZING! Teaching someone to set realistic expectations is the best thing and when they exceed their expectations then it’s just that much better.

  20. This seems kind of cruel but it is realistic. He was told to try hard but not set expectations to high. That is how it was done then. It was still that way in the 70s & 80s when I was in school. Nowadays they don’t want to hurt kids feelings and tell everyone they are special and talented. I am not sure that serves them when they hit the real world.

“And next time I hope to do even better!”

Now.. be careful. Don’t set those expectations too high son. You are the class idiot you know.

  22. Wow, I’m not so sure the creepy principal is sending the right message. Lower your expectations? How about using the grade he got to motivate him to try harder? Way to go creepy principal!
